UCSF Department of Bioengineering Spring 07-08

The dramatic expansion in Bioengineering research and education at UCSF continues to reflect the increased interest in engineering principles being applied to fundamental problems that occur in the many branches of biology and medicine. Current resources are being augmented by Bioengineering practices within the School of Medicine through the new Surbeck Lab and the many departmental labs integrated through university shared bioengineering practices.

Advancements in the research laboratories and academic facilities for mathematics and computational sciences increase the potentials for education and new applications here within the headquarters of the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3) on the Mission Bay Campus (pdf link). QB3 affords everyone within the University the chance to encounter transitional programming for the entrepeneural actvities being hosted.

This activity has resulted in even more changes, bringing the Bioengineering program forward to form a operational level as a new deparment within the School of Pharmacy.

The current five focus areas for faculty and students:

Will be expanding within the new Academic year 2008-2009. Please, revisit this site for updates as they emerge. Prospective students will have even broader
array of opportunity to explore interests and focuses within
