As a world class Program in Bioengineering it is our mission to develop individualized research through focused academic programming. These endeavors take place in a well staffed educational and professional environment for the mutual benefits produced by the interconnection of the quantitative sciences with biology and medicine. Advanced levels of participation are encouraged through shared communications with the joint program activity with UC Berkeley, pursuit of shared resource structure throughout the UC System, and the start-up endeavors in the bioengineering entrepeneurship facilities.
Bioengineering was established as a Division of the UCSF, School of Medicine in January 2002.
Increased participation brought expansion of services to full Program status by the Spring of 2005.
Department level needs were recognized and the University began steps to recognize and run the program at department level across both the school of Pharmacy and Medicine, a first for UCSF, as the department of "Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences".
This change of status recognizes the placement across the schools and many academic departments of the university. The organization now provides the coordination and support of growth in bioengineering research and educational programs at UCSF in Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering programs at both campuses; UC Berkeley and San Francisco.
Located on the Mission Bay campus with the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research(QB3) at Byers Hall. The new location includes Chair of the Program, Sarah Nelson, Dr.rer Nat., the administrative staff (contact us), and many of the Bioengineering graduate students labs.
While curriculum and research offer integrative planning, the Department of Radiology continues to provide Bioengineering with a business home, providing support for human resources, financial planning and grants management.
